Amazon Account Deactivated vs Suspended: What Is the Difference?

Amazon now uses the word “deactivated” in most notices, while sellers and forums still say “suspended”. This guide explains what each term means, how a deactivated account differs from a permanent ban, and what to do first if your Amazon account has been deactivated.

Quick answer

In practice, an Amazon account deactivated and a suspended account mean the same thing: your selling privileges have been removed until you appeal or complete verification. A permanent ban is different: Amazon has reviewed your appeals and decided not to reinstate. A deactivation can usually still be appealed, so read the notice carefully before responding.

Key takeaways

  • “Deactivated” is the word Amazon uses in most notices today; “suspended” is the older term.
  • Both mean selling is stopped until Amazon accepts an appeal or verification.
  • A permanent ban usually comes after appeals have been reviewed and refused.
  • The notice tells you why the account was deactivated and how to respond.
  • Your first appeal matters most, so do not rush it.

Deactivated vs suspended: is there a difference?

For most sellers, no. Amazon updated its wording over the years, and current Account Health notices usually say your account has been deactivated. Older notices, forum posts and many service providers still say suspended. Both describe the same situation: you cannot sell until Amazon reviews and accepts your appeal, verification or Plan of Action.

What changes the outcome is not the word but the reason in the notice. A deactivation for verification is handled very differently from one for inauthentic items or a Section 3 business practices violation.

Why Amazon deactivates seller accounts

  • Verification problems: identity, address or bank details did not match. See video verification failed.
  • Inauthentic or counterfeit complaints. See inauthentic suspension.
  • Section 3 business practices, including manipulation or deceptive conduct. See Section 3 suspension.
  • Performance: order defect rate, late shipments or cancellations above Amazon’s targets.
  • Related accounts linked to another restricted account.
  • Review manipulation or incentivized reviews.

What to do first after deactivation

1. Save the notice

Copy the full notice, the date and any ASINs or order IDs. You will need the exact wording.

2. Check Account Health

Look at every flagged item, not only the one named in the email. Hidden issues can cause a second rejection.

3. Do not appeal the same day

A rushed appeal with a guessed root cause is the most common reason first appeals fail.

4. Prepare evidence

Gather invoices, verification documents and screenshots that match the reason in the notice.

5. Write a specific Plan of Action

Follow the three-part structure in our Amazon Plan of Action template.

Can a permanently deactivated account come back?

Sometimes, but it is much harder. Once Amazon says it will not reinstate the account, it usually only reconsiders when there is genuinely new information or evidence that earlier appeals missed something important. We read these cases honestly and will tell you if we do not think an appeal is worth paying for.

Frequently asked questions

Is a deactivated Amazon account the same as suspended?

Yes, in practice. Amazon mostly uses “deactivated” in current notices, while many sellers still say “suspended”. Both mean your selling privileges are paused until Amazon accepts your appeal or verification.

Can I appeal a deactivated Amazon account?

Usually yes. The notice explains how to respond, normally through the Account Health page in Seller Central. Read the reason carefully and prepare a specific Plan of Action before you submit.

What happens to my inventory and money?

FBA inventory stays in Amazon warehouses while the account is deactivated, and you can usually request removal. Funds may be held until the case is resolved. The exact rules depend on the reason for deactivation.

How is a permanent ban different?

A permanent deactivation usually comes after Amazon has reviewed appeals and refused to reinstate. It is still possible in some cases to request reconsideration with new evidence, but options are limited.

Can you help with a deactivated account?

Yes. Our appeals team reads the notice free of charge, explains what Amazon is asking for, and quotes our fee before any work starts.
